SAO Textbooks
Enrolled students have access to Swinburne University's extensive (online) library collection, including journal subscriptions. Access information will be provided within a module of the Canvas Unit "ORG-STU-SAO-Community", which all SAO students are automatically enrolled in.As with printed books, there may, however, be restrictions on how many students can access an online book at any one time. It may, therefore, be desirable to secure your own copy.
Please see the general textbook information below, and you may click on the subject code to view specific textbook information for that Unit.
Note: Swinburne Astronomy Online does not supply textbooks. For local (Australian) students, many of the textbooks can be ordered from the Swinburne Bookshop Cooperative. Here are are the Shipping Costs. Contact information for the Bookshop can be found on their webpage. For more distant students, we suggest you try your local university or college bookshop, or buy your textbooks online through amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. You may find cheaper books by searching DirectTextbooks, StudentMarket.com and Chegg. Below we will list both the required textbooks for each unit, plus some additional recommended reading. Note that the textbooks are required, while the recommended reading are optional references for further reading and are not required. Where available we also list the E-book versions. These will be cheaper than the hardcopy versions, perhaps half the hardcopy price. You should make sure that the E-book version can be read on your computer, prior to purchase.

- E-book: Galaxies in the Universe - An Introduction, Sparke & Gallagher, 2nd edition, 2007, ISBN 9780511292323. Sparke & Gallagher is a useful reference for students who want to delve more deeply into both the physics and mathematics of galactic astronomy than the course material covers (and note that there is quite a bit of maths in this book). It is optional however, as the AST80006 course material plus resource material on the internet are sufficient to cover the required course material for this unit.
