Financial Support

The availability of financial assistance for Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO) students depends on your country of residence, citizenship status, and the support programs available through your government, employer, or other organisations.

SAO is unable to provide a complete list of funding options worldwide, but we are happy to assist where possible. If you are aware of astronomy education funding opportunities that may be useful to other SAO students, please let us know.

Australian Students

Australian students, and some eligible New Zealand students, enrolled in an SAO award program (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or Master of Science) may be eligible for a FEE-HELP loan.

FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that assists eligible students with the cost of tuition fees. Repayments are made through the Australian tax system once income reaches the compulsory repayment threshold. Eligibility depends on citizenship, residency, and other Government requirements.

Students applying to SAO through Swinburne are asked during the enrolment process whether they intend to apply for FEE-HELP.

Scholarships and fee assistance

From time to time, Swinburne University or external organisations may provide scholarships, discounts, or other forms of financial assistance for eligible students. Availability and eligibility criteria vary, so prospective students should check current Swinburne scholarship information and relevant professional organisations.

International Students

SAO welcomes students from around the world. International students should check whether their employer, government, professional organisation, or other funding body provides assistance for online postgraduate study (e.g., US Department of Education website and this USA Federal Student Aid web page).

Because funding arrangements differ substantially between countries, SAO students are encouraged to investigate options available in their own region.

Employer support

Some students receive financial assistance from their employer, particularly where astronomy study contributes to professional development, education, or science communication activities.

If your employer requires confirmation of enrolment or other supporting documentation, SAO staff may be able to assist.
