Prof. Matthew Bailes
My first love is binary and millisecond pulsars, how they are born, have they evolve, and the exciting experiments you can do with them, particularly in the area of general relativity. Currently I am part of a larger project to determine whether we can detect gravitational waves in the Universe using an array of millisecond pulsars with Dick Manchester, Shri Kulkarni, Rick Jenet, and their multitude of students and postdocs. I also like to design computer systems for pulsar processing, eVLBI and radio astronomy.
I founded the organisation that was responsible for development of the Virtual Room, an octagonal virtual reality system on display at Melbourne museum, and am currently working on Directing my first film, "Realising Einstein's Universe".
I am a member of innumerable committees, among them, the Australia Telescope Steering Committee and currently am Vice Chair of the National Committee of Astronomy.
